Do you ever read books that are outside the norm for you? What books are outside the norm for you? Will you ever take the chance and read something outside your normal? Why or why not?
This is something that I haven’t done very often. I read “The Diary of Ann Frank” about 3 or 4 years ago and that’s something outside of what I normally read. There are certain genres I normally stick to like fantasy, horror, science fiction, mystery, or thriller/suspense. They all usually involve fiction in some form so “The Diary of Ann Frank” was something different for me. I had been wanting to read that book for a long, long while and I had never had the chance to until a few years ago.
What are some books that I can read that would be outside of the genres I normally read?
This is my 100th post on my blog. I’m so excited! I know my blog hasn’t been around as long and I don’t have quite as many posts on it as some of the others out there. I’d just like to celebrate the little wins with those of you who are following my blog and like to read up on what I’m writing about. I also want to take this time to thank all of you who are following my blog and to anyone who takes the time to read, like or comment any article I write. I know you don’t have to take the time to do that but you did. For that, I say thank you.
Anyway, I’m close to finishing the book I’m currently reading so there will be another post coming soon about it. My thoughts are beginning to stray towards what book I’ll choose next when I am done with this one. So, how do you go about choosing that next book to read when you finish the one you’re on? Do you just pick a book at random? Do rotate through different genres so you don’t get burned out on anything? If so, what genres do you go through and in what order are they? Do you choose books by a specific author? Does your mood determine which one you pick up next? How do you choose?
I usually go by what I feel like reading at that specific moment. I usually spend a few minutes browsing my bookshelves (or my Kindle) to determine which book I’m going to read next. Sometimes, it is an agonizing decision but I do come to a choice eventually.
As far as a particular genre, I’ll switch back and forth between several different ones depending on what I feel like reading when I’ve finished reading a book and I am picking up another one. So, it’s hard for me to pick up just one genre or another.
horror = Sometimes I’m in the mood for something scary. Something from either Stephen King or Joe Hill. They are fun to read whenever there is a thunderstorm going on outside.
mystery = I like a good mystery from time to time. Something that makes you think. Agatha Christie and Frances Duncan are authors who can write a good mystery.
suspense/thriller = These are good to keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page….not that you can’t do that in horror as well.
fantasy = The Harry Potter series or the Chronicles of Narnia series are what come to my mind when someone says fantasy. They are books that take you off into other worlds.
romance = While I have read the Twilight series, I don’t read this genre very often. Of course, there are some books from some of the other genres that will have bits of romance in them. Like the Hunger Games or Divergent series…..I would file those under fantasy but I can see having bits of romance in them.
There may be some books that I’ll read that don’t really fit into any of the above genres and that’s okay. I’m one of those people that is open to other things, especially if it sounds interesting enough. What is your favorite genre to read from?
